The low-carbon, high-alloy austenitic stainless steel 904L has 19–23% chromium, 23–28% nickel, 4-5 molybdenum, and 1-2 percent copper. Excellent resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulphuric acid, is provided by this composition. Its yield strength is about 220 MPa, its tensile strength is between 490 and 710 MPa, and its elongation is good at 35%. Even in extremely acidic and chloride-rich environments, the alloy retains its strength and resistance to corrosion.
