The high-carbon martensitic stainless steel 440C has 0.95–1.20% carbon and roughly 16–18% chromium. After heat treatment, it shows exceptional hardness and resistance to wear, with a tensile strength of up to 760–965 MPa. In less hostile settings, 440C provides good edge retention qualities and moderate corrosion resistance. Both when annealed and when hardened, it retains its magnetic properties. Critical components exposed to moderate corrosion and mechanical wear benefit greatly from 440C’s ability to retain high strength and hardness, even though it is not as corrosion-resistant as lower carbon grades.
