The high-carbon martensitic stainless steel 440C has a chromium content of roughly 16–18%, a carbon content of 0.95–1.20%, and trace amounts of silicon, manganese, and molybdenum. It achieves a high hardness level (up to 60 HRC) and provides exceptional wear resistance following heat treatment. The alloy exhibits good dimensional stability under mechanical stress and a tensile strength of approximately 760 MPa. 440C works well in mildly corrosive environments, which makes it perfect for precision components that need superior hardness and strength, even though its corrosion resistance is moderate when compared to austenitic grades.
