High-carbon martensitic stainless steel 440C has trace levels of silicon, manganese, and molybdenum in addition to 16–18% chromium and 0.95–1.20% carbon. Following heat treatment, it attains high hardness levels, usually between 58 and 60 HRC, along with exceptional resistance to wear and abrasion. It provides good dimensional stability and a tensile strength of up to 760 MPa. 440C works well in mildly corrosive environments, despite having a moderate level of corrosion resistance when compared to austenitic grades.
