431 Stainless Steel The typical composition of Hex Bars, which are martensitic stainless steels, is 15.0–17.0% chromium, 1.25–2.5% nickel, 0.12–0.20% carbon, and trace amounts of silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, and manganese. They have a hardness of up to 250 HB when annealed, a high tensile strength of up to 850 MPa, and a yield strength of about 600 MPa. Particularly after heat treatment, this grade offers outstanding impact strength, high toughness, and good corrosion resistance. In mildly aggressive environments, SS 431 shows good resistance to fatigue and stress corrosion and is magnetic as well.
